Aranya Eco Villa

Project Overview

The Aranya Eco Villa is EcoBuild Studio's most comprehensive residential project in India to date — a 5,100 sq ft luxury home nestled on a 1.8-acre hillside plot on the outskirts of Pune, designed and built to achieve GRIHA 4-Star certification while providing the Mehta family with a home of exceptional comfort, material richness, and ecological integrity.

The design draws deeply from the Deccan plateau's vernacular architecture — thick load-bearing walls, deep shaded verandahs, and a double-height central courtyard that acts as the thermal heart of the house. The courtyard captures cool night air, stores it within the high-mass walls, and releases it slowly through the day, maintaining interior temperatures between 24–28°C through the harshest summer months without mechanical cooling.

The primary structural and enclosure system uses insulated compressed rammed earth — sub-soil excavated from the site itself, compacted in 150mm layers between timber formwork, and reinforced with natural hemp fibre. The wall thickness of 600mm provides extraordinary thermal mass, acoustic performance, and a visual depth and texture that no manufactured material can replicate. The earth's natural ochre and terracotta tones shift beautifully through the day as the light changes — each wall a unique record of the site's geology.

A 24kW rooftop solar PV array using high-efficiency TOPCon monocrystalline panels, paired with a 30kWh lithium iron phosphate battery bank, provides 100% of the villa's electricity needs with surplus exported under net metering. Solar water heating serves all domestic hot water requirements, and a biogas digester processes kitchen organic waste to provide fuel for the kitchen hob — closing the household's organic waste loop entirely.

The water management strategy is comprehensive: a 120,000-litre underground rainwater harvesting tank collects roof runoff; a greywater recycling system treats bathroom and laundry wastewater for garden irrigation; and permeable gravel driveways and swale landscaping ensure that 85% of rainfall is absorbed on-site rather than discharged to storm drains. Combined, these systems achieve 72% independence from municipal water supply — a figure that rises to near-100% during the monsoon season.

Interior finishes are exclusively natural: polished Kota stone flooring, hand-trowelled clay plaster walls in warm earthy tones, teak joinery from FSC-certified plantations, and custom handmade terracotta tile bathrooms by a local artisan workshop in Pune. The landscape design uses exclusively native Deccan flora — no irrigation required after the first establishment year.

Challenge & Solution

The Challenge

What We Faced

The hillside site presented complex geotechnical challenges: a 15% gradient requiring careful foundation design, black cotton soil with high shrink-swell potential requiring deep pile foundations, and a location within a designated forest buffer zone imposing strict tree preservation requirements that constrained the buildable footprint significantly. The client's brief simultaneously demanded luxury finishes and genuine ecological performance — a combination that required sustained creative problem-solving throughout the design and construction process.

Our Solution

How We Solved It

Our geotechnical team designed an innovative reinforced concrete pile and grade beam foundation that steps with the natural topography in a series of split-level platforms, completely avoiding the three protected specimen trees on the site and minimising cut-and-fill earthworks. The black cotton soil challenge was addressed by installing the rammed earth walls on an elevated reinforced concrete plinth that isolates them from soil moisture. For the luxury-sustainability balance, we curated a material palette of natural materials with refined, precise detailing — demonstrating conclusively that ecological construction and sophisticated design are entirely complementary aspirations.

"EcoBuild Studio transformed our vision into reality. The green villa exceeded all our expectations in both beauty and sustainability."
